The Luangwa Valley has a great number of birds available for twitchers to see. A recent count by BirdWatch Zambia (www.hbw.org / HBW Alive & BirdLife International) concluded that South Luangwa National Park is home to 469 species, while North Luangwa National Park boasts 416 species of bird.

Below are some snapshots of what is on display at Tafika Camp.

Takwela Camp is set on a gorgeous site, on the Eas

Takwela Camp is set on a gorgeous site, on the East Bank of the Luangwa River. The view from Camp looks directly across the Luangwa and onto the Mwaleshi River confluence.

During the dry months, this Hotspot is teeming with wildlife and predators transit across this confluence regularly.

Kamini's little male cub is growing fast. Being a male, he is less obedient than he should be and has been seen by guests wandering around on his own. The first two years are a very dangerous time for young male leopards. But we are confident in Kamini's ability as a mother to give him the best shot at a future that he can get.

The story of this unbelievable leopardess continue

The story of this unbelievable leopardess continues to blow us away.

Mutima, daughter of the revered Olimba, has filled our hearts to the brim since she was born a little over three years ago.

At the end of November 2023, she walked southwards over 100km to end up at @_sungani_ camp in the Lusangazi Sector of South Luangwa National Park.

After 6 months deep in the south, she returned home to the Nsefu Sector, another journey of over 100km. This would have been through a multitude of female leopard territories, and Mfuwe Town.

Having spent a few months at home, she was last seen at Tafika the afternoon that Kamini was desnared. After this a sighting absence followed.

Next she showed up ACROSS THE LUANGWA RIVER, around @shentonsafaris and @lioncampzambia hadn't heard much about her for some time, and then late last week she turned up again on the east bank, having CROSSED THE RIVER A SECOND TIME.

She is back home and has hit maturity, and it will br fascinating to see what happens as she was last seen walking and marking the bushes of her mum's territory with confidence.

This female happened to be downwind from a Buffalo

This female happened to be downwind from a Buffalo carcass left over by hyena in the night. She came up from drinking in the Luangwa River, caught scent of the carcass and trotted with excited intent.
