July brings with it the birthday month for Christine Coppinger, John and Carol’s older daughter. This year, Christine was surprised with a trip up to Luangwa to spend some time with the family. While all together in the valley, it is customary to spend a night or two out at the Chikoko Trails together. This year was no different, and so we packed our bags and headed out for Chikoko Tree Camp.

We were greeted with the warm smile smiles from chef Patson and the Chikoko camp staff that we have all come to love. After a quick cup of tea and some freshly baked cake, we headed out for a short walk. I was lovely to be out in the warm and peaceful afternoon sun as a family. We enjoyed catching a reasonably good daytime view of two four-toed elephant shrew on the way back into camp.

The morning walk across to Crocodile River Camp was filled with great sightings. Shortly after leaving Chikoko we came across a family group of Thornicroft’s Giraffe. We sat quietly and watched them for half an hour.

Shortly after leaving the giraffe we came across a few waterbuck and kudu.

Throughout the walk we came across fresh buffalo tracks and droppings. Eventually we managed to catch up with the herd and spent a good few minutes enjoying watching them.
