"Python Massacre?"
- 30 June 2008 00:00

Over the last 2 weeks we have seen three python deaths. John spotted the first 3 metre python from the microlight, very close to camp, with a honey badger feeding on it. There was no clear evidence to ascertain who killed the python, but it seems unlikely the honey badger was the culprit. There were many vultures in the trees for about 2 days and finally hyena made off with the remnants leaving no trace at all of the beautiful snake.

"A Tribute to Julius"
- 23 June 2008 00:00

Sadly today we pay tribute to Julius Ngona who passed away yesterday evening, after a prolonged illness over the last year. We shall miss his cheeky sense of humour and confidence.

Through the last few weeks of his illness, he insisted on returning to work despite his weakened condition. The kindness and gentle support shown to Julius by all of our staff over this time was very heartening.

Julius was a most remarkable paddler and is one of...read more

"Ernst’s Drive to North Luangwa "
- 16 June 2008 00:00

Due to its extreme remoteness, Mwaleshi Camp is the last of the Remote Africa Safaris camps to open every year. After a seven hours grind northwards from Tafika, the Luangwa River has to be negotiated in order to access the North Luangwa National Park. By the end of May, the level of the river has usually dropped sufficiently to enable our Mercedez Benz Unimog – a 4X4 vehicle deluxe, developed for the German Army – to navigate the river.

"“HANGING ABOUT” THE TAFIKA DRIVEWAY!"
- 12 June 2008 00:00

On Monday we had seven of the seventeen Salt Pan lions lounging within a sausage tree on the Tafika driveway. Escaping the flies by climbing a few metres above the ground, they looked cool, capable and perfectly nonchalant, beautifully silhouetted within the tree.

Bryan and Heather, cameras ever ready, sat patiently watching the antics, when one young male tried a quick maneuver and overbalanced. He hung on with determination but couldn’t pul...read more

"WELCOME TO LINDA SHENTON"
- 09 June 2008 00:00

Remote Africa Safaris is pleased to welcome Linda Shenton to our team. She will be assisting Heather on reservations.

Born and raised in Zambia, Linda raised her own family in Zambia until 2007 when they all emigrated to Sweden. She will therefore be based in Sweden and communicating with us through cyberspace on a daily basis.

Linda’s parents had strong connections with the Luangwa so she was a frequent visitor as a child. She herself wor...read more

"BIG FIVE IN THE NORTH"
- 04 June 2008 00:00

Ernst made his annual pilgrimage north last week, across the Luangwa River, to commence camp building at Mwaleshi. There was the inevitable trauma when the 4X4 unimog truck got stuck in one of the subsidiary rivers shortly before dark but they finally drove into camp the next day without feeding any crocodiles!

Two days later he left camp building in full swing to attend the arrival of five new rhinos into the North Park. They all come from So...read more

"ORBS AT SUNSET by Carol Coppinger"
- 01 June 2008 00:00

Sunset on the Mutanda Plain is always stunning and last night was no exception. As the evening wore on I noticed orbs in my photographs and by the last image I took of Linda and Isaac there were hundreds of them.

I am not actually sure what they are but Diana Cooper, who is writing a book on orbs, has requested images of photographs with orbs in them. She suggests that they are high energy light beings - like angels. Dave Back, with his top en...read more

"2008 SEASON HAS BEGUN"
- 30 May 2008 00:00

As May draws to a close, camp building frenzy builds as all our South Luangwa camps must be open by June the 1st.

Tafika opened mid May with a fresh new bar in the sitenje and twin basins in our chalet bathrooms. Game viewing soon gathered momentum and a pride of 12 lions were spotted on our driveway and again periodically over the last week. Leopards were seen both hunting and with a kill.

Before sunrise last Monday, our supply truck saw...read more

"BABY HIPPO’S FIRST STEPS"
- 18 April 2008 00:00

At breakfast this morning we heard the movement of something very close to the bank, thrashing around in the water. Peeping over the edge we observed a large, mean crocodile staring brazenly ahead, refusing to sink below the surface as one would expect at such close quarters. A hippo shifted in the water, no more than 3 metres from us, hidden in the overhanging branches and a tiny baby ‘blob’ popped up beside her, floating around a little out of ...read more

"PLAYING THE ODDS by John Coppinger"
- 12 April 2008 00:00

‘I think you are playing the odds somewhat’, said Jumbo Williams, when I announced that we would be paddling the Lower Luangwa again this year.

Jumbo was with us back in ’94 when we undertook our very first paddling expedition on the Luangwa River. In order to access the Luangwa we paddled down the Mwaleshi River – this proved to be a foolhardy venture, as the Mwaleshi is clearly patrolled by hungry dragons in the rainy season. From the momen...read more
